SAVE THE DEER PRJ. is launched
Nara Park in the city of Nara is a habitat for more than 1,200 deer,
and it is one of the most popular places visited by over 16.3 million people who come to the prefecture every year.
Visitors take pictures of the deer bowing, eating “deer rice crackers,” and sunbathing near the temples.
While this is taken for granted, did you know that plastic bags are one of the causes of death of the deer?
Large amounts of plastic bags and food wrappers were found in the stomachs of nine deer that died between March and June 2019, according to the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation.
To help save the deer and the environment,
the Setre hotel in Nara has launched this project called SAVE THE DEER PRJ.
According to the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation, masses of plastic bags were found in the stomachs of nine of the 14 deer that died in Nara Park in a five-month period.
In March 2019, the foundation posted a photo on Twitter of the mass that was retrieved from the stomach of a deer , commenting that the mass weighed as much as 3.2 kilograms.
Since July 2020, Japan’s convenience stores and supermarkets are required to charge for plastic bags. Why not use furoshiki,* which traces its origin to Nara, as an eco-friendly reusable bag? Buy one as a memento of your trip to Nara or as a souvenir gift to take back home. By doing so, you will help save the deer.
*Furoshiki is a type of cloth used to wrap and transport items in Japan since ancient times.
Setre will donate 10% of the proceeds from the furoshiki to the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation, an organization committed to protecting the deer in Nara Park.
The SAVE THE DEER Furoshiki comes with this accommodation plan. Stay in Nara on this plan, and you can join our efforts to protect the deer!
